Most Rhondda people don’t know that the film “Pride” is based on true events and actually think the plot of the film is totally made up.
Also, the majority of people we asked think the Rhondda would have made a more suitable location for the film.
Onllwyn
“The Rhondda is more well known than Onllwyn or whatever it’s called.”, said John Gwyn-Jones from Maerdy, “It should have been about us.”
Set in the small mining village of Onllwyn and based on a true story, the film depicts a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984, resulting in an alliance between the two communities. The alliance was unlike any seen before and was ultimately successful.
“Perhaps when they make the sequel it can be about us.”, John added.
My Rhondda News asked BBC Films who were involved in the production of the film if they would have considered making it about the Rhondda if it had been a fictional story, but they refused to comment.
