Porth’s Hannah Street Crowned Porth High Street Of The Year

This week has seen success after success for the Rhondda, with Treorchy and Porth both winning major awards.

On Thursday, Treorchy was crowned the UK’s high street of the year, beating off much bigger competition from far and wide. Not to be outdone though, Porth has also had its share of success this week, with Hannah Street winning an award for being the best high street in Porth.

The Rhondda town boasts a Greggs, a train station and a job centre, not forgetting it once proudly had its very own Woolworths and fancy dress shop.

Hannah Street, aged 24, from Treorchy said, “I can’t believe my home town won an award and also a street that shares the same name as me also won something, it’s absolutley ridiculous really.”

The win for Porth is a rare good news story as high streets around the country suffer steep decline amid a change in shopping habits, but you’ll always find somewhere to eat in Hannah street, which also boasts some of the best takeaways in Porth too.

Mary Fringe from Blaenllechau, who used to work in Hannah street’s, now closed down fancy dress shop , The Wizard’s Sleeve said, ” I love Hannah Street, with it’s bargain booze shops, chippies and bookmakers, it’s a great place for a morning out of the house, any day of the week.”

Hannah Street, the street not the person, also entered the best high street out of Porth, Tonypandy, Pontygwaith and Ferndale competition, but only managed to come third.
